고향에 사는 아버지가 오랜만에 우리집에 오셨다.

My father who lives in the home town visited my home for the first time in a long time.

나는 남편과 함께 아버지와 이런저런 이야기를 나누며 거실에 앉아 있었다.

I was sitting in the living room with my husband while talking about these and those things to my father.

그때 갑자기 남편이 아버지를 모시고 영화관에 가자고 했다.

Then my husband suddenly told me to bring my father to a cinema.

그 말에 나는 “영화관은 무슨? 아버지는 어둡고 갑갑해서 영화관 가는 거 안 좋아하셔.” 하고 내뱉었다.

As a response, I said “what cinema? My father doesn’t like to go to a cinéma because it’s dark and closed.

그래도 아버지에게 슬쩍 “영화 보러 가실래요?”하고 물었는데 손사래를 치실 것 같던 아버지는 그저 가만히 계셨다.

I still asked my father, “Would you go to watch a movie?”, then my father who I thought to be disgusted, stayed still.

그 순간 나는 아버지의 마음을 읽을 수 있었다.

At that moment I could read his mind.

나는 왜 아버지가 영화관에 가는 것을 안 좋아하실 거라고 생각했을까.

Why did I think that my father wouldn’t like to go to the cinema.

> ~까로 끝나는 의문문이 물음표가 아닌 마침표로 끝나는 경우 화자가 지난 날을 돌아보며 하는 후회나 반성을 나타낸다.

When an interrogative sentence ~까 has a full stop (not a question mark), it signifies the speaker’s regret or self-reflection in a retrospective way.

Thinking how many times I have judged in my own shoes, I became heavy-hearted.

영화간에 갈 준비를 하며 옷도 살피고 모자도 쓰고 벗기를 반복하시는 아버지의 얼굴에는 미소가 가득했다.

While getting ready to go to the cinema, my father was checking his outfit and keep taking his on and off his hat, his face was full of smiles.

그런 아버지를 보며 나는 앞으로 아버지가 무엇을 좋아하시는지 관심을 가지기로 했다.

Seeing him, I decided to pay attention to what he likes.
